Abstract

Background: Mentha species are widely used for therapeutic purposes and their cytotoxic effects have also been reported against various cancer cell lines. But ideal anticancer drug is that which is proved non-toxic or less toxic against normal cells.

Objective: The objective of current study was to assess cytotoxic potential of Mentha spicata and Mentha piperita plant extracts in normal cell line, Vero.

Methods: Cell line was cultured in complete dulbecco’s modified eagle medium media along with fetal bovine serum via using cytotoxic assay, MTT. Mentha spicata and Mentha piperita treated cells were not only compared with untreated cells but also compared with positive control, cisplatin, a standard anticancer drug available in market to analyze its efficacy on normal cells.

Results: Results displayed mild toxicity effect of plant extracts at different doses 5µg/ml (0.8600 ± 0.1260, 0.8940 ± 0.01513), 10µg/ml (0.8340 ± 0.03305, 0.7727 ± 0.04430) and 50µg/ml (0.7490 ± 0.04521, 0.8050 ± 0.06509) as compared to cisplatin with same doses 5µg/ml (0.7203 ± 0.01365*), 10µg/ml (0.5783 ± 0.06964****) and 50µg/ml (0.5073 ± 0.07950****) as cell viability was more in plant extracts treated cells than cisplatin treated cells and absorbance values of plant extracts treated cells were close to values of untreated cells (0.8733 ± 0.02517).

Conclusion: It is concluded that Mentha spicata and Mentha piperita have less cytotoxic effect in normal cells and is regarded as safe for normal cells. It can be evaluated in cancer cells for its cytotoxic potential for treatment of different cancer types.
